The Screaming Whisper

Sounds like one of those two dollar novels in the used bookstore doesn't it? Actually it is a method that I have used to teach diaphragmatic energy to young wind players.

Every student that has broken the classroom rules probably has already developed a technique that they can use to increase the dynamic energy in their playing.

Picture yourself in the back row of the classroom of the strictest teacher you ever had in school. Now this really juicy tidbit of information has just come your way and you absolutely MUST tell your best friend. The problem is that your best friend sits in the back 6 rows away and if you get caught talking again ....well....you just better not get caught. What do you do? You tighten up those diaphragm muscles and you "scream" a whisper toward your friend. "HEY RICK!! GUESS WHAT I JUST FOUND OUT?"

This is the same process that most wind players use to add energy to their playing. They already know the skill, you just have to devise some exercises that will improve their ability to use it on their instrument.
